RFID Technology

As its name suggests, RFID is a radio frequency identification system between two or more objects, where one emits radio signals and the other responds according to the signal received.

It can be useful where continuous data recording is required, or where it cannot be carried out due to human impossibility or cost. However, RFID can be useful in internal company situations, in own processes or in processes for exchanging information and goods between different agents in the chain.

As an example:

  • Inventory control
  • Traceability
  • Goods movement
  • Industrial process control
  • Process automation

  • Asset tracking
  • Access and vehicle control
  • Optimisation in hospitals
  • Logistics and warehousing

To be able to identify objects by radio frequency, different RFID components need to be used: RFID Labels, RFID Readers, RFID Tags and RFID Software.

The fundamental purpose of RFID is to transmit the identity of an object or product, through RFID tags or labels, when activated by an RFID antenna. This information reaches the RFID reader, which in turn is transmitted to the software so that the data obtained can be analysed and managed.

There are different radio frequencies and each of them has a different use. The use of the different frequencies is totally generalised and approved worldwide by different entities.

Technology

UHF RFID Technology

The ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID system, with the UHF Gen2 standard, covers the 860 to 960 MHz frequency band, where reading systems can cover a range of over 12 metres.

HF RFID Technology

The high frequency (HF) RFID system covers the frequency of 13.56 MHz with a reading range of between 10 cm and 2m.

LF RFID Technology

The low frequency (LF) RFID system covers the 125 kHz or 135 kHz frequency range. It provides a reading range of about 90 cm.

NFC Technology

NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology covers the 13.56 MHz frequency range, as in the case of HF RFID. However, as it uses a power of 15 mA, it gives a reading range of a distance of up to 20 cm.
